Last winter, SNGPL announced a gas schedule for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that ran from December to February, with domestic supply in three daily windows: 5:30am to 8:30am, 11:30am to 1:30pm and 5:30pm to 8:30pm, as reported by Daily Times and The News. This winter's timings have not been announced yet, but low pressure and limited hours are a familiar part of winter in the twin cities. October and November are the time to prepare, before every plumber in the city is booked.
Get your geyser ready
- Flush the tank to remove a year of sediment.
- Check the burner, pilot and thermostat.
- Inspect the flue pipe for rust and blockage.
- Check for leaks at the inlet, outlet and safety valve.
- Insulate exposed hot water pipes on the roof.
Consider a backup for low gas pressure
- Electric or hybrid geyser: heats water when gas pressure is low.
- Instant electric geyser: suits a single bathroom or kitchen.
- Solar geyser: higher upfront cost, lowest running cost.
An electric geyser needs its own breaker and proper earthing, so have an electrician check the wiring before installation.
Heater safety
- Service gas heaters and replace cracked rubber pipes and loose clips.
- Never sleep with a gas heater on in a closed room.
- Keep a window slightly open for ventilation.
- Do not use a gas compressor. News reports say gas companies disconnect meters and fine users.
Frequently asked questions
What were the winter gas timings in Islamabad and Rawalpindi?
Last winter, SNGPL supplied domestic gas from 5:30am to 8:30am, 11:30am to 1:30pm and 5:30pm to 8:30pm between December and February. This winter's schedule has not been announced yet.
When should I service my geyser?
Service it in October or November, before the cold starts and before plumbers are fully booked.
Is an electric geyser better than a gas geyser?
An electric or hybrid geyser gives hot water when gas pressure is low, but costs more to run. Many homes keep gas as the main source and electric as backup.
Why is my geyser not heating properly?
Common causes are low gas pressure, a blocked burner, a faulty thermostat or sediment in the tank. A plumber can clean and test it in one visit.
