Rehabilitation work on nine major Rawalpindi roads is due to begin by the end of October 2026, Dawn reported on 21 October. The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation has provided about Rs1.6 billion, and the Punjab Communication and Works Department will carry out the work because the corporation lacks the capacity to do it itself. Work starts once contracts are awarded.
If you live, shop or run a business on any of these streets, the next few months will be noisy. Here is the list and what to do about it.
The nine roads and their budgets
- Khayaban-i-Sir Syed Road — about Rs213 million
- Bokra Road — about Rs226 million
- 5th Road (upgrade) — about Rs139 million
- Rawal Road, Ali Nawaz Chowk to Murree Road — about Rs242 million
- Chandni Chowk to Commercial Market Road — about Rs116 million
- Railway Workshop Road — about Rs248 million
- China Market to Gordon College Road — about Rs138 million
- Satellite Town 4th B Road — about Rs141 million
- Band Khana Road — about Rs214 million
The same department has also been handed three further projects: Chaudhry Bostan Khan Road, Chakri Road, and the road towards Falcon Chowk along the Islamabad Expressway.
What to expect while work is on
The report does not give a schedule for closures or diversions. From past projects of this size in the city, expect:
- One side of the road closed at a time, with traffic squeezed onto the other.
- Dust, especially in the first weeks when the old surface is broken up.
- Disturbed water, gas and sewer connections at the edges of the carriageway.
- Shops on the affected stretch losing walk-in customers for a while.
If you live on one of these roads
- Keep windows and doors sealed on the road side and clean filters on ACs and air purifiers more often.
- Check your water connection and the inlet to your overhead tank after any digging outside your gate. A cracked pipe shows up as low pressure or muddy water.
- Photograph your boundary wall, gate and driveway before work starts, so any damage is easy to claim.
If you run a shop or office there
- Tell regular customers how to reach you and where to park while the road is dug up.
- Move deliveries to early morning before the work crews arrive.
- Use the quiet period for repairs, repainting or a deep clean you have been putting off.
If you are planning a move
Moving house or office onto or off one of these roads will be harder for a few months. Book movers early, tell them the exact street, and ask whether a smaller vehicle is needed for the final stretch.
