Gas supply down to a few hours a day: setting up a safe winter kitchen in Rawalpindi

Six hours of gas, three slots, and LPG at Rs5,000 a refill. Here is how to cook safely on more than one fuel.

On 1 November 2026 The Express Tribune reported that gas load management has pushed many families in Rawalpindi back to firewood and coal for cooking. According to the report, piped gas reaches homes for about six hours a day in three two-hour slots, with outages from 9pm until sehri now routine, and a domestic LPG refill has risen from Rs3,000 to around Rs5,000. Separately, Profit by Pakistan Today reported on 28 October 2026 that the Petroleum Division is preparing a winter plan that would give homes eight hours of full-pressure gas around meal times; that plan had not been officially announced at the time of writing.

If you are switching to LPG cylinders

  • Keep the cylinder upright, away from the stove and in a ventilated spot, never in a closed cupboard.
  • Replace cracked or hardened rubber hoses and check that the regulator sits firmly. A handyman can fit a new hose and clamps in minutes.
  • Test connections with soapy water, never with a flame.
  • Close the cylinder valve after cooking, not just the stove knob.

If you are adding electric cooking or heating

  • An induction cooktop, electric kettle or instant water heater each draw a heavy load. Have an electrician check the breaker and wiring before you plug one in, and use a dedicated wall socket, not an extension board.
  • IESCO is announcing maintenance shutdowns almost daily at the moment, so keep the LPG stove as a backup.

If wood or coal is being used

  • Burn it only in a well-ventilated space with a working exhaust fan or chimney; smoke and carbon monoxide build up fast in a closed kitchen.
  • Expect soot. A kitchen deep clean every few weeks, covering the exhaust fan, tiles and ceiling, stops grease and black dust spreading through the house. A handyman can fit an exhaust fan if the kitchen has none.

Plan cooking around the supply windows

  • Cook in batches during the gas slot and reheat later; a pressure cooker shortens cooking time.
  • A trained cook from Muramat's home-staff service can prepare the day's meals in a single window.
